Paul Gauguin Itineraries: How I'd Choose

2 min read

I've helped a lot of travellers pick between Paul Gauguin sailings, and the choice usually comes down to time and temperament rather than a single best route. The ship runs short Society Islands loops, longer Tuamotus and Marquesas voyages, and the occasional Fiji and Tonga sailing that only comes around roughly every other year. Each one has a different rhythm. I'll lay out how I match people to the right one. Knowing the differences upfront saves a lot of second-guessing later.

The classic 7-night Society loop

This is where most people start, and it's the one I recommend for a first visit. You get Moorea, Taha'a's private motu, Bora Bora and usually Huahine or Raiatea in a week, which is enough to understand the region without rushing. The pace leaves room for sea days, and on a ship this size those days never feel crowded.

Longer Tuamotus and Marquesas voyages

If you have ten nights or more, the extended itineraries add coral atolls like Rangiroa and Fakarava and the remote Marquesas. These sailings cover more distance, so expect more time at sea between dramatic landfalls. I suggest them to repeat guests or anyone who wants the full sweep of French Polynesia in one trip.

Fiji, Tonga and the wider South Pacific

Roughly every other year the ship repositions into Fiji and Tonga, which is a different flavour of the South Pacific entirely. These sailings sell out to people who've been watching for them, so if the dates appear and they suit you, I'd move early. Schedules shift, so confirm the current season when you're ready.

Frequently asked questions

How long are most Paul Gauguin cruises?

The core itineraries run around seven nights in the Society Islands, with longer ten-to-fourteen-night sailings reaching the Tuamotus and Marquesas. Dates vary, so check the current schedule.

Do the itineraries repeat the same islands?

The Society Islands anchor most routes, but the longer voyages add atolls and the Marquesas, and the occasional Fiji and Tonga sailing changes the mix entirely.

When do the Fiji and Tonga sailings run?

Approximately every other year. They draw a loyal following, so I'd watch for the announcement and book early once dates are confirmed.
