Can a Paul Gauguin Cruise Be a Wellness Trip?

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

People sometimes ask me whether a cruise can really count as a wellness trip, and on the Paul Gauguin my answer is yes, with a caveat. It is not a clinical retreat with a rigid program; it is a small ship that makes it easy to slow down if you choose to. What worked for me was building my own rhythm: a morning swim off the marina, a spa appointment, a quiet lunch, and no agenda. Here is how I help guests turn the ship into a genuine reset.

A small ship lowers the volume

With around 330 guests, the Paul Gauguin never has the frantic energy of a big resort ship, and that alone does a lot of the work. There are no crowds to push through and no schedule forcing you anywhere. I found I slept better simply because the days were unhurried. If your idea of wellness starts with not being rushed, the scale of this ship is the feature that matters most.

Water as the main therapy

For me the lagoon did more than any treatment. The watersports marina off the stern means you can swim, paddleboard, or float in warm, clear water whenever the ship is anchored in a calm spot. Gentle morning swims became my routine. Add the spa for a massage and you have the two halves of a restful day, with the lagoon being the part I would not skip.

Build your own program

Because there is no fixed wellness curriculum, I tell guests to design their own: choose a couple of spa appointments, eat lighter at La Veranda where the local fish is excellent, and pick one calm excursion rather than packing the day. Spa services and availability vary and can book up, so reserve what matters to you early and confirm current details when you plan.

Not a structured retreat, but its small size, spa, and easy lagoon access make it well suited to a self-directed reset. You build the pace that suits you.

What wellness facilities are aboard?

There is a spa for treatments and massages, plus the watersports marina off the stern for swimming and paddleboarding when the ship is anchored in calm water.

Should I book spa treatments in advance?

Yes. Spa services and availability vary and can fill up, so reserve the appointments that matter to you early and confirm current details when planning.
