Ship & Onboard

What the Spa on the m/s Paul Gauguin Is Really Like

Home / Articles / Ship & Onboard

I booked a massage on my first sea day aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, mostly because the lagoon outside the window looked too good to waste below deck. I was wrong about wasting time, and right about the view. The spa here is small, in keeping with a ship that carries only about 330 guests, but that is part of why it works. You are not queuing behind a thousand other people for a slot. In the sections below I will walk through what the spa actually offers, how it fits around port days, and the practical things I wish I had known before I stepped aboard.

What you'll find at the spa

The spa leans on calm rather than spectacle. Expect massages, facials, and body treatments delivered by a small team, with products and techniques that draw on the islands you are sailing through. Because the ship is intimate, the space is too, so the atmosphere is quiet and unhurried rather than sprawling. Alongside the treatment rooms there is a modest fitness area for guests who like to keep moving, and the open decks make an easy spot to cool down afterward. Treatment menus and pricing change over time, so confirm the current options when you book.

When I think it's worth booking

My honest advice: reserve treatments for the days you are mostly at sea, not the days you are in port. A morning in Bora Bora or off Taha'a is hard to beat, and you will not want to be inside for it. Sea days, by contrast, are made for slowing down, and that is when the spa earns its keep. If you have your heart set on a specific time, book early in the sailing, because on a ship this size the popular slots go quickly.

How the spa fits the rest of the ship

The spa is one piece of a deliberately relaxed onboard rhythm. After a treatment I usually wandered up for lunch at La Veranda or sat out near the stern marina watching guests come back from a swim. The Tahitian hosts known as Les Gauguines keep the cultural side of the day alive with music and dance, so the ship never feels purely about pampering. Think of the spa as a quiet anchor in a day that also includes the lagoon, the food, and the islands themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book spa treatments in advance?

It helps. With only around 330 guests the spa is small, so popular times fill fast. I'd reserve early in the cruise, ideally for a sea day.

Is there a gym as well as a spa?

Yes, there is a compact fitness area in addition to the treatment rooms. It covers the basics rather than offering a large gym floor.

Are spa treatments included in the fare?

Generally no. The fare is broadly inclusive of dining and many excursions, but spa treatments are usually extra. Confirm what's included when you book, as details vary.
