The Private Motu Day I Never Skip Onboard

By Norm — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

The private motu day off Taha'a is the one part of a Paul Gauguin sailing I tell people never to trade away. Motu Mahana is the cruise line's own islet, and for a day it becomes your beach, with a floating bar, watersports and a barbecue under the palms. I've spent it swimming, drifting in the lagoon and doing very little, which is exactly the point. It's the day the trip slows down. Here's what to expect and how to get the most from it.

What the day actually involves

You tender across to the motu and have the run of it: warm shallow water for swimming, kayaks and paddleboards, a Polynesian barbecue lunch, and Les Gauguines, the Tahitian hosts, sharing music and craft. There's no schedule to keep, which after a few port days is a relief. I usually claim a patch of shade early and let the day unfold.

How I'd plan around it

Because it's restful by design, I tell clients to book their busier excursions on other days and treat the motu as a reset. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for the coral, and a little patience for the first tender. The floating bar is a nice touch, but the lagoon is the real draw.

Why it beats a regular beach stop

On a ship of around 330 guests, the motu never feels packed, and because it's private there are no day-trippers or vendors. That combination, a genuinely quiet beach with the ship's service behind it, is hard to find elsewhere in French Polynesia. It's the day people describe most when they get home.
