How Polynesian Culture Comes Aboard the Gauguin

People often ask me whether a cruise can really connect you to a place, and I understand the skepticism. But the Paul Gauguin is a little different, mostly because of the people aboard. Many of the crew are Polynesian, and a group of Tahitian hosts called Les Gauguines sing, dance, and share their language and traditions throughout the voyage. I've sat on deck listening to them in the evening and felt genuinely at home. Here's how the culture actually shows up, day to day.

The People Make the Difference

Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins are Tahitian hosts who travel with the ship, and they do far more than perform. They teach the basics of the language, demonstrate how to tie a pareo, explain the meaning behind the dances, and happily answer questions about island life. Because the ship is small, at around 330 guests, you actually get to know them over a week. That familiarity is what turns a show into a real exchange.

Learning by Doing, Onboard

The onboard program leans on hands-on sessions rather than lectures. You might try a few ukulele chords, learn a step or two of the tamure, or watch a cooking demonstration that later shows up as local fish on the menu at La Veranda. None of it is mandatory, which I like. You can dip in when something catches your interest and skip the rest to read on deck.

Carrying It Ashore

What happens onboard sets you up for the islands. By the time you reach Motu Mahana, the private island off Taha'a, or step ashore in a village, you already recognize a few words and customs. That small head start changes how locals respond to you. I always encourage guests to learn 'ia ora na' and 'maruru' before they sail, because a greeting in the language opens doors a guidebook never will.

Frequently asked questions

Who are Les Gauguines?

They're Tahitian hosts who sail with the ship as cultural ambassadors. They lead music and dance, teach language and crafts, and share island traditions throughout the voyage, giving the cruise its strong Polynesian character.

Do I have to take part in the cultural activities?

Not at all. Everything is optional. Some guests join every session, others prefer to watch. The relaxed pace means you can engage as much or as little as you like.

Will I actually meet local people, or just the crew?

Both. Many crew members are Polynesian, and shore excursions and island days bring you into contact with residents in villages and at sites like Motu Mahana off Taha'a.
