Packing for a Paul Gauguin Cruise in Tahiti

Packing for French Polynesia is where I see people overthink it most, so I keep my advice simple. You'll live in swimwear and light, breathable clothes, with a couple of nicer outfits for evenings. The climate is warm and humid year-round, and the ship is relaxed by day, so heavy luggage just gets in your way. I've made this trip and helped a lot of travellers prepare for it, and the people who pack light always come back happier. Here's what actually earns its place in the bag.

Clothes that work in the heat

Lightweight, breathable fabrics are the whole game in this climate. Bring two or three swimsuits so you always have a dry one, plus quick-drying shorts, light shirts and a sundress or two. Evenings on board are casual but a notch up from daytime, so pack a couple of resort-smart outfits, a collared shirt or a nice dress, for dinner at L'Etoile or La Veranda. A light sweater or wrap is worth having for breezy evenings on deck and the ship's air conditioning. Footwear can be minimal: sandals, water shoes for reef walking, and one comfortable pair for excursions.

Sun, water and the small essentials

The sun here is strong, so reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are non-negotiable. If you have your own snorkel and mask, bring them; the ship has gear at the stern marina, but personal fit is nicer for daily use. Pack a refillable water bottle, any medications in their original packaging, a dry bag for excursions, and a basic first-aid kit. A waterproof phone case earns its keep on lagoon days. These small items are the ones people forget and then pay tourist prices for, so they're worth a spot on the list.

Documents and a few don'ts

Keep your passport, travel insurance details and any entry paperwork together and accessible, and bring photocopies stored separately. Entry and visa requirements depend on your nationality and can change, so confirm current details before you travel rather than relying on what was true last year. As for what to leave behind: skip the heavy outfits, the just-in-case shoes and the formalwear. The ship doesn't demand it, and every kilo you don't pack is one you don't drag through three airports to get here.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dress code in the evenings?

Evenings are resort-casual rather than formal. A collared shirt or a nice dress covers dinner at the ship's restaurants. There's no need for tuxedos or gowns, so leave the heavy formalwear at home.

Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?

Not necessarily, since gear is available at the stern marina, but many people prefer their own mask for fit and comfort on daily swims. If you have it and have room, bring it.

What documents should I have ready?

Carry your passport, travel insurance information and any required entry paperwork, with copies stored separately. Visa and entry rules vary by nationality and change over time, so confirm current requirements before you leave.
