Getting in the Water on a Polynesia Cruise

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

The part of these cruises I love most happens once you're actually in the water. On the Paul Gauguin the warm lagoons and the marina off the stern make it simple to swim with reef fish, rays and turtles, even if you've never snorkelled before. I remember floating over a coral garden off Taha'a and losing track of an hour completely. You don't have to be certified or sporty to get this. You just have to be willing to put your face in the water.

Snorkelling suits almost everyone

The lagoons here are warm, clear and often shallow, which makes them forgiving for beginners. Most stops include gear and a calm area to start, so you can build confidence before heading out. I've taken nervous swimmers who were hooked within ten minutes. If you can float and breathe through a tube, you can do this.

Rays, turtles and the bigger thrill

Beyond the fish, the encounters people talk about most are with rays and turtles — graceful, slow-moving and surprisingly relaxed around respectful swimmers. Some excursions visit spots where rays gather in the shallows. The rule is always the same: look, don't touch, and give them room. Keeping your distance is what makes them comfortable enough to stay.

For divers and families alike

Certified divers can go deeper on guided dives, while families stick to the shallows and still see plenty. The mix is what makes these sailings work for mixed groups — one person dives, another snorkels, a third just swims off the stern. Everyone meets back on board with a story. That range is genuinely hard to find on a larger ship.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to snorkel here?

No. The lagoons are warm and often shallow, gear is provided, and calm areas let beginners build confidence before going further out.

Can I swim with rays and turtles?

Often, yes — some excursions visit spots where they gather. Always keep your distance and avoid touching them, which keeps the animals calm and the encounter safe.

Is there anything for certified divers?

Yes, guided dives let certified divers go deeper while snorkellers and swimmers stay in the shallows, so mixed-ability groups are all covered.
