Cocktails Aboard the Paul Gauguin: My Take

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

I'll admit the drinks are not why I book people on the Paul Gauguin, but they're a small pleasure I've come to look forward to. Having travelled these islands, I notice the difference when a bar uses real Tahitian fruit and local rum instead of pre-mixes. On board, beverages are largely included, which changes how you relax, you stop counting and start savouring. My habit is a drink at the stern before dinner while the ship pulls away from an island. Here's what I'd actually order and where.</p>

What's worth ordering

I gravitate to anything built around fresh island fruit, passionfruit, pineapple, lime, because that's where the kitchen and bar are at their best. Local Tahitian rum holds up well in a simple mix, and I'd rather have that than a fussy drink with ten ingredients. If you like wine, the included pours at dinner are perfectly good, and you can ask for a recommendation to match the fish. Keep it simple and you'll drink better.

Where to drink, and when

My favourite spot is the stern bar at sail-away, when the light goes gold and the island shrinks behind you. The main lounge is the livelier choice in the evening, with music and a bit of a crowd, while the pool bar suits a lazy afternoon. Because most drinks are included, I tell clients to treat the bars as part of the rhythm of the day rather than a splurge. That mindset alone makes the trip feel more generous.

A note on what's included

Standard spirits, beer, wine and soft drinks are generally part of the fare, with premium bottles and special requests sitting outside that. I never quote exact pricing because it varies and is worth confirming when you book, but the day-to-day drinking rarely adds up the way it does on bigger ships. If you have a favourite label, mention it to your travel planner ahead of time. Small ships can sometimes stock a request.

Frequently asked questions

Are drinks included on the Paul Gauguin?

Most standard beverages, wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks, are generally included, while premium and specialty bottles may cost extra. Exact inclusions vary, so confirm the current details when you book.

Can the bars handle non-alcoholic requests?

Yes, on a ship of around 330 guests the bartenders happily make alcohol-free versions of most drinks, and there's always fresh juice and soft drinks on hand.

Is there a mixology or tasting experience?

There are usually informal tastings and demonstrations during the sailing. Schedules change cruise to cruise, so I'd check the daily program once aboard rather than planning around it.
