Hiva Oa's Art and Culture by Small Ship

Home / Articles / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hiva Oa is one of those Marquesan islands I'd struggled to reach on my own, which is exactly why I value seeing it from a small ship. It's where Paul Gauguin spent his final years and is buried, but the deeper story is Marquesan: the carving, the tattoo traditions, and the stone tiki that predate any European visitor. On the m/s Paul Gauguin, with around 330 guests, you tender ashore quickly and have real time on the island rather than a rushed photo stop. I've walked the Calvary Cemetery above Atuona and stood at the tiki sites, and both stayed with me. Here's what to focus on.

Gauguin's last chapter

Atuona, Hiva Oa's main village, is where Gauguin lived and died in 1903, and his grave sits in the Calvary Cemetery on the hill above town. There's a cultural centre with reproductions of his work that puts the place in context. It's a quiet, moving stop — less about the paintings themselves and more about understanding why a painter came this far to find his subjects.

Living Marquesan art

The art I'd actually cross an ocean for is Marquesan: intricate wood and stone carving, bold tattoo design that influenced the whole Pacific, and the ancient tiki at sites like the ones near Puama'u. These traditions are still practised, not just preserved in a museum. Meeting a carver at work tells you more about the Marquesas than any gallery could.

Making the most of the call

Because the island is remote and roads are rough, a guided 4WD outing is the sensible way to reach the tiki sites and viewpoints in the time a port call allows. I tell clients to choose one cultural focus — Gauguin's Atuona or the archaeological sites — rather than rushing both. The ship's quick tendering is what makes either possible at all.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Hiva Oa linked to Paul Gauguin?

The painter spent his final years there and is buried in Atuona's Calvary Cemetery. The island also has a cultural centre dedicated to his time in the Marquesas.

Can you see ancient tiki on Hiva Oa?

Yes. Hiva Oa has some of the largest stone tiki in French Polynesia, notably at the Puama'u archaeological site, usually reached by a guided 4WD outing.

How much time do you get ashore?

It depends on the itinerary, and times can change, so confirm when you book. A small ship tenders guests in quickly, which generally means more usable time on the island.

Far & Away Adventures are South Pacific & French Polynesia specialists. Norm has sailed the m/s Paul Gauguin himself and is familiar with this and many other cruise options across French Polynesia and the South Pacific; Kirsten has travelled these islands too — so the advice here comes from firsthand time aboard, not a brochure.
