Honeymooning in Tahiti Aboard the Paul Gauguin

I've planned a lot of Tahiti honeymoons, and the question I get most is whether to base in an overwater bungalow or sail. My honest answer for couples who want to see more than one island is the m/s Paul Gauguin. With about 330 guests it's intimate, the islands come to you while you sleep, and you wake up to Bora Bora or Moorea without packing twice. I've sailed it myself and watched newlyweds unwind in a way that resort-hopping rarely allows. Here's why it works so well for a honeymoon, and how I'd shape the trip.

The romance of waking up somewhere new

The appeal for honeymooners is simple: you unpack once and the scenery changes daily. One morning it's the lagoon at Bora Bora, the next it's the green ridgelines of Moorea. On a small ship you're tendering ashore in minutes, not queuing with thousands, so your days ashore feel private. For couples that's the whole point — less logistics, more time together.

Onboard, just the two of you

Dining gives you options without effort: L'Etoile for French menus, La Veranda for Polynesian dishes and local fish, and Le Grill for relaxed open-air meals. The ship is small enough that a quiet corner is always easy to find. Add the spa and the watersports marina off the stern, and you can fill a sea day or do gloriously little.

The day I'd build the trip around

If I'm pitching this to a couple, I lead with Motu Mahana — the line's private islet off Taha'a, with a bar in the lagoon and dancing on the sand. It's the most romantic day of the sailing. The cruise runs year-round; the drier May-to-October window is my usual recommendation, though exact prices and dates vary, so confirm them when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cruise or a resort better for a Tahiti honeymoon?

If you want several islands without repacking, the small-ship cruise wins on ease. If you want to stay put in one overwater bungalow, a resort may suit better. Many couples I work with do a night or two ashore plus the cruise.

Which islands does the honeymoon itinerary include?

Most sailings take in Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and Taha'a, often with the Tuamotus. Routes vary by departure, so check the specific itinerary when you book.

When is the best time to go?

French Polynesia is a year-round destination, with drier weather roughly May to October and warmer, wetter months from about November to April. Prices and availability vary, so confirm when booking.
