A Day on Motu Mahana, Paul Gauguin's Motu

2 min read

A motu is the Tahitian word for the little sandy islets that ring the lagoons here, and Motu Mahana is the one Paul Gauguin keeps for its own guests off Taha'a. I've spent a full day on it, and it's become my shorthand for what these sailings do well. The day asks nothing of you beyond showing up and slowing down, which after a few busy ports is exactly what most people need. With the ship carrying only around 330 guests, the beach feels like it's yours. Here's how a day on the motu tends to go.

Arriving on the motu

You reach the islet by tender from the anchored ship, a short hop across calm water. Because there are so few guests, the crossing is quick and you're soon stepping onto soft sand. I like to go ashore early while the light is gentle and the loungers are free. From there the day is yours to shape however you want.

What fills the hours

The line sets up a beach barbecue, a floating bar out in the shallows, and the Gauguines bring music and dancing through the afternoon. The lagoon is shallow and warm, so swimming and snorkelling are easy and unrushed. Between dips you can stretch out under a palm with a drink and simply watch the water. It's a curated day, but it never tips into feeling staged.

Small touches that make it

What I remember most are the little things, ordering a drink while standing waist-deep in the lagoon, or hearing music drift down the beach as lunch is served. None of it is showy, and that restraint is exactly why it works. You leave feeling like you had a real island day rather than a performance of one. I tell clients it's the day they'll describe first when they get home.
