Activities the Gauguines Lead Aboard the Gauguin

People ask me what there is to do on a ship that carries only about 330 guests, and my answer is usually: more than you'd expect, and most of it led by the Gauguines. These are the ship's Tahitian hosts, and the activities they run are the ones I remember most from my own sailing. I've sat through the ukulele lessons (badly) and the language sessions (slightly better), and I've watched shy travellers turn into the loudest singers by week's end. None of it feels like forced cruise-ship fun. Here's how I'd plan your days around what they offer.

Crafts and music in the lounge

Through the week the Gauguines run hands-on sessions — weaving, pareo-tying, ukulele, and learning a handful of Tahitian phrases. They're short, drop-in style, and pitched so a complete beginner isn't lost. I always tell clients to catch the ukulele session at least once; even if you never play again, you'll hear the evening music differently afterwards.

The day on Motu Mahana

The highlight is the call at Motu Mahana, the line's private islet off Taha'a. The Gauguines bring the music ashore, there's a bar set up right in the lagoon, and the dancing happens on the sand rather than a stage. It's the most relaxed day of the itinerary and the one most of my clients photograph the most.

Pacing your sea days

With a ship this size you can do as much or as little as you like, and the marina off the stern means watersports are easy to slot in between sessions. My advice is to leave at least one sea day mostly empty — the Gauguines' activities are better enjoyed unhurried, and French Polynesia is a place to slow down, especially in the drier May-to-October stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of activities do the Gauguines run?

Mostly cultural: weaving and craft sessions, ukulele and dance lessons, basic Tahitian language, and leading the festivities on the private island. They're informal and open to all guests.

Are the activities suitable for kids?

Yes, the craft and music sessions work well for older children and teens. Because the ship is small and calm, families tend to find it easy to join in together.

Can I do watersports between activities?

Yes. The ship has a retractable marina off the stern for kayaks, paddleboards and swimming on suitable days, so it's easy to mix active time with the onboard sessions.
