Top Dining Highlights on the Paul Gauguin

If you ask me which meals to look forward to on the Paul Gauguin, I won't start with the fancy one. The dish I still think about is the poisson cru I had at La Veranda, lime-bright and made with fish that hadn't travelled far. On a ship of around 330 guests the food feels personal rather than mass-produced, and a few experiences stand out enough to plan your week around. Here are the ones I flag for every traveller. None of them require a reservation scramble, just a little intention.

Local Polynesian dishes done right

The poisson cru, the grilled fresh fish, the tropical fruit at breakfast, this is where the kitchen earns its reputation with me. La Veranda is where I'd send you for the Polynesian and local-fish cooking, and it tastes of the place rather than a generic cruise menu. I tell clients to seek out the local dishes rather than defaulting to the familiar. That's where the South Pacific actually lands on your plate.

The Motu Mahana beach barbecue

The single best meal of the week, for most people I send, happens off the ship. At the line's private islet off Taha'a there's a barbecue on the sand with a floating bar just offshore. Eating grilled fish with your toes in the lagoon is the kind of thing you remember long after the trip. Don't rush this one; let the afternoon stretch out.

Easy meals and the social table

Le Grill up top is my pick for an unfussy breakfast or a starlit dinner without ceremony, and open seating means you can pull up to a shared table and meet other travellers. The relaxed pace is part of the pleasure on a ship this size. Specific themed nights and menus change between sailings, so confirm current details when you book. The highlights, though, are dependable.

Frequently asked questions

What's the must-try dish?

Poisson cru, the Tahitian lime-and-coconut raw fish. La Veranda is where I'd order it, and it's the flavour that most says French Polynesia to me.

What's the best dining experience?

For most travellers I send, it's the beach barbecue on the private islet off Taha'a, grilled fish on the sand with a floating bar nearby. Hard to beat.

Are special dining nights included?

Themed nights and menus vary by sailing and are generally part of the experience, but confirm current details when you book since offerings change.
