Photographing French Polynesia by Cruise

I'm not a professional photographer, but I've come home from these islands with the only photos friends ever ask about. From the Paul Gauguin you're shooting off a small ship that sits close to the reef, which changes what's possible — sunrise over Bora Bora's peak, a motu from the tender, fish in clear shallows. Here's what I've learned about getting those shots without hauling a studio along.

Shoot the early and late light

The hour after sunrise and before sunset is when these lagoons photograph best; midday sun flattens the water and blows out the highlights. From the ship I set an alarm for first light over Moorea or Bora Bora, when the peaks catch colour before the wind picks up. Plan your day around those windows and you'll come home with more keepers than chasing shots at noon.

Pack light, pack smart

A mirrorless body with one versatile zoom, say a 24-70mm equivalent, covers most of what you'll see. Add a polariser to cut glare on the water and a rugged waterproof compact for the snorkel days. Bring more batteries and cards than you think — salt air and long shore days drain both faster than you expect.

Photographing people respectfully

Some of the strongest images are of the Tahitian hosts, the Gauguines, and people you meet ashore. Ask first, show them the result, and don't shoot through a long lens to dodge the interaction. A short conversation almost always gets you a better, warmer portrait than a grabbed frame ever would.

Frequently asked questions

What camera should I bring?

A mirrorless or DSLR with one good zoom around 24-70mm equivalent handles most scenes. Add a polariser for the lagoons and something waterproof for snorkel days.

When is the light best?

Early morning and late afternoon. Midday sun is harsh on the water, so I plan shoots for the hour after sunrise and before sunset.

Can I take photos of local people?

Yes, but ask first and be friendly about it. A short exchange gets you a more natural portrait and is simply the respectful way to do it.

Far & Away Adventures are South Pacific & French Polynesia specialists. Norm has sailed the m/s Paul Gauguin himself and is familiar with this and many other cruise options across French Polynesia and the South Pacific; Kirsten has travelled these islands too — so the advice here comes from firsthand time aboard, not a brochure.
