Motu Mahana and the Ship's Private Island Day

When people picture a private island in French Polynesia, they're usually picturing something close to a day on Motu Mahana, the Paul Gauguin's own islet off Taha'a. I've spent that day myself, and it's one of the easiest parts of the trip to love — you tender across, and the crew has already set up a beach barbecue, a floating bar and watersports gear. There's no booking scramble and no crowd from other ships. Let me tell you what to actually expect, because the reality is better than the hype and worth planning around.

A day on Motu Mahana

Motu Mahana is a small private motu off Taha'a that the ship has to itself for the day. The crew run a barbecue lunch on the sand, set up loungers, and float a bar out in the shallows so you can wade over for a drink. Because only the ship's guests are there — a few hundred at most — it never feels packed. I usually tell clients to claim a spot in the shade early, then drift between swimming, the kayaks and simply doing nothing. It's the day people describe most warmly when they get home.

Getting in the water off Taha'a

The water around the motu is calm and clear enough that even nervous swimmers relax, and the snorkelling close in is genuinely good. The ship's watersports marina extends the day with kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear at no extra hunt. If you like a guided trip, the famous coral garden drift snorkel near Taha'a is one of my favourite excursions anywhere in French Polynesia — a gentle current carries you over the reef while you barely move. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes; the coral is shallow.

Making the island day count

My one piece of advice is not to over-schedule the motu day. People sometimes book a busy excursion that morning and arrive worn out; I'd rather you treat it as the slow centre of the trip. Bring a hat, something to read, and let the crew handle lunch. Exactly which sailings include the Motu Mahana day, and what's set up, can vary by itinerary and season, so I confirm the current details when I arrange your booking. It's reliably a highlight, but the specifics are worth checking.

Frequently asked questions

What is Motu Mahana?

It's a small private islet off Taha'a that the Paul Gauguin uses as an exclusive beach day for its guests, with a barbecue lunch, loungers and a floating bar set up by the crew.

Do all sailings stop at the private island?

Many French Polynesia itineraries include it, but stops vary by route and season. I confirm whether your specific sailing visits Motu Mahana when booking.

Is there an extra charge for the island day?

The beach setup and watersports gear are part of the experience rather than a separate booking, though offerings can vary. I'll confirm what's included on your sailing.
