Moorea on a Paul Gauguin Cruise: Excursions I Recommend

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

Moorea is usually the first island the Paul Gauguin reaches, and it's the one I tell first-timers not to underestimate. The lagoon is gentle, the green peaks behind it are dramatic, and it's close enough to Tahiti that the day starts early — so a little planning goes a long way.

The lagoon and the rays

A lagoon tour here is the easy yes: warm, shallow water, snorkelling spots, and the chance to see rays and reef fish up close. It suits all swimming levels and it's the day most couples remember from Moorea. Bring your own mask for fit and reef-safe sunscreen.

Into the interior

If you want contrast, a 4WD tour climbs to the Belvedere lookout over Cook's and Opunohu bays, past pineapple plantations and old marae. It's a couple of hours and gives you the island's other half — the green, mountainous interior most beach days never touch.

How to time the day

Because Moorea often comes early in the sailing and the ship's time there can be tight, I book the main excursion in advance rather than deciding onboard. Do the active thing in the morning, then keep the afternoon loose for the beach or the ship's marina.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best excursion in Moorea?

For most travellers a lagoon snorkelling tour is the highlight; pair it with a 4WD trip to the Belvedere lookout if you want to see the island's mountainous interior too.

Is Moorea good for non-swimmers?

Yes — the lagoon is calm and shallow near shore, and land-based 4WD tours mean non-swimmers still have a full day.

How long is the ship in Moorea?

Time in port varies by itinerary, and Moorea often falls early in the sailing, so booking your main excursion ahead is wise. Confirm the day's schedule for your departure.
