Honeymoon Cruising in Tahiti & Bora Bora

Home / Articles / Cruise Planning

I've sent a lot of newlyweds to French Polynesia, and I've sailed the m/s Paul Gauguin myself, so I tend to be honest about what makes a honeymoon here land. The appeal isn't really the overwater bungalow photo everyone has seen. It's that a small ship of around 330 guests lets you wake up to a different island every couple of days without packing and repacking. You get Bora Bora's lagoon and Moorea's green peaks on one trip, and someone else handles the logistics. For a couple who wants romance without a fussy itinerary, that combination is hard to beat.

Why a ship beats island-hopping by air

The usual French Polynesia honeymoon means flying between islands, checking in and out of resorts, and eating most meals where you sleep. It works, but it eats up days and budget on inter-island flights. A cruise flips that: you unpack once, the ship repositions overnight, and you trade resort sameness for Moorea one morning and Taha'a the next. On the Paul Gauguin you also get the private island day at Motu Mahana off Taha'a, which is about as close to a private-beach honeymoon moment as a ship can give you. For couples short on vacation time, seeing several islands in a week without the airport shuffle is the real luxury.

Picking cabins, dates and the right pace

For a honeymoon I usually steer couples toward a balcony cabin if the budget stretches, mostly for slow mornings with coffee and a lagoon view. On dates, French Polynesia is a year-round destination, drier roughly May to October and warmer and more humid November to April, so it comes down to when you can travel rather than a bad season to avoid. Prices and sailing dates shift, so confirm current details when you book rather than trusting an old quote. My honest advice is not to cram in every excursion; pick a couple that matter to you and leave room to do nothing together.

Romance built into the days

The quiet wins tend to be the ones couples remember. Dinner at L'Etoile, the French restaurant, or local fish at La Veranda; a swim straight off the marina at the stern when the ship is at anchor; the Tahitian hosts, Les Gauguines, sharing songs and dances in the evenings. None of it is forced. You can make the trip as active or as lazy as you like, and most honeymooners find a rhythm of one shore adventure and one slow day. That balance, more than any single sight, is why this kind of cruise suits a honeymoon so well.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Tahiti and Bora Bora honeymoon cruise be?

Most sailings in the Society Islands run around seven nights, which is enough to see Bora Bora, Moorea, Taha'a and Tahiti at an unhurried pace. If you can add a night or two on Moorea or Tahiti before or after, it softens the jet lag and gives you a buffer for flight delays.

What's actually included in the fare?

Paul Gauguin fares are largely all-inclusive: dining across the ship's restaurants, drinks, and watersports off the stern marina are typically covered. Specifics and current pricing change, so confirm exactly what's included when you book rather than assuming.

When is the best time to go for a honeymoon?

French Polynesia is good year-round. The drier, slightly cooler window is roughly May to October; November to April is warmer and more humid with a higher chance of passing showers. Pick the dates that fit your wedding, not a season you're trying to dodge.
