What to Pack for a Tahiti and Bora Bora Cruise

2 min read

Packing for French Polynesia is mostly about resisting the urge to overpack. The climate is warm and the days are casual, so the mistakes I see are people hauling too many clothes and forgetting the few small things that actually matter. I've sailed these islands enough to have my list down to a rhythm now. Here's what I'd put in the case, what to wear aboard, and what you can safely leave at home.

Clothing and the onboard dress code

Days are relaxed: swimwear, light cottons, a cover-up, and sandals will carry you through most of the trip. Evenings aboard lean toward what I'd call resort casual, so pack a few nicer outfits, a sundress or a collared shirt and slacks, for dinner in the dining rooms. Nothing formal is required, but a light layer is smart because the air conditioning indoors can feel cool after a day in the sun.

Gear for the water

This is where the important small items live. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, because it protects the coral and isn't always easy to buy on the islands, along with a good hat and polarised sunglasses. I never travel here without water shoes for rocky entries and a dry bag for my phone on lagoon tours. If you have a snorkel mask you love, bring it, though gear is generally available; a familiar mask just fits better.

What to leave at home

You won't need heavy clothing, formalwear, or a hairdryer, which most cabins provide. Skip the bulky beach towels too, as the ship supplies them. The one thing I'd plan around rather than pack blindly is medication and any specific toiletries, since island shops are limited; bring what you rely on. Baggage allowances on the flights in vary by airline and can change, so confirm yours before you finalise the case.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a formal night?

Not in the strict sense. Evenings are resort casual, so a couple of smarter outfits cover you. Leave the tuxedo and the long gown at home unless you simply enjoy dressing up.

Do I need to bring snorkel gear?

Gear is generally available onboard, so it's optional. I bring my own mask only because a familiar fit is more comfortable. Water shoes, though, are worth packing for everyone.

What's the one thing people forget?

Reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag. The sunscreen matters for the coral and can be hard to find locally, and the dry bag saves your phone on every lagoon outing.
