Snorkeling Rangiroa from the Paul Gauguin

2 min read

Rangiroa was the day that sold me on the Tuamotus. It is one of the largest atolls in the world, essentially a ring of coral around a lagoon so big it has its own horizon, and the Paul Gauguin anchors right in it. I dropped off the marina at the stern, put my face in the water, and within a minute there were blacktip reef sharks cruising below me, harmless and unbothered. If you only snorkel once on the trip, I would make it here. Let me tell you what to expect and how to set yourself up for it.

What you actually see

Rangiroa's lagoon is famous for clear water and steady currents that bring in marine life. On my day there I saw reef sharks, eagle rays, schooling fish and coral gardens in good shape. The drift areas near the passes can move fast, which is part of the fun but also why you stay with the guides. You do not need to be an expert; you need to relax, breathe slow, and let the water do the work.

Getting in from the ship

The Gauguin's retractable marina off the stern makes this easy. You step almost straight from the ship into the lagoon for snorkeling, kayaking or paddleboarding, with gear and crew right there. For Rangiroa specifically, that direct access means more time in the water and less faffing with tenders. Excursions to the pass and the so-called aquarium area are usually offered too, and I would book the snorkeling-focused one.

A few things I would pack

Bring a rash guard for sun more than cold, your own mask if you are particular about fit, and reef-safe sunscreen because you will be face-down for a while. A light current means staying near your group rather than drifting off to chase a fish. Listen to the briefing on the passes; the guides know the timing of the tides and you do not. Small habits like these turn a good snorkel into a great one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need snorkeling experience for Rangiroa?

No, basic comfort in the water is enough for the calmer areas. The faster pass drifts are best done with the guides, who position you and watch the group.

Are the sharks dangerous?

The blacktip and grey reef sharks here are used to snorkelers and not interested in people. Keep a respectful distance, follow your guide, and they are one of the highlights.

Is snorkeling gear provided?

The ship makes snorkeling easy from the marina, and excursions are arranged onboard. Specifics and any rental details can change, so confirm what is included when you book.
