The Gauguin stops couples ask me about most

After years of booking the Paul Gauguin, I can almost predict the question couples will ask: which stops are the romantic ones. The honest answer is that a 330-guest ship in French Polynesia is hard to get wrong, but a few places do stand out. I learned to slow down on this ship long before I understood why couples love it so much. What follows are the three stops I steer honeymooners and anniversary travellers toward first. None of them need a big budget to feel special.

Bora Bora, earned its reputation

Bora Bora is the one everyone pictures, and for once the postcard is fair. The lagoon around the central peak runs through every shade of blue, and the ship usually gives you a good stretch of time here. I tell couples to do one organised thing, a lagoon tour or a motu picnic, and then leave an afternoon completely open. The unplanned hours, swimming straight off the marina or watching the light change on Mount Otemanu, are the ones people tell me about afterward.

Motu Mahana, the ship's own islet

Motu Mahana is the private islet off Taha'a that the Gauguin uses as a beach day, and it is quietly one of the most romantic days of the cruise. There is a floating bar in the lagoon, Tahitian hosts known as Les Gauguines sharing music and crafts, and enough beach that you can find your own patch of shade. Because only your shipmates are there, it never feels crowded the way a public beach can. Bring nothing but a towel and let the day be slow.

Moorea, the one I would not skip

Moorea, with its jagged green ridges rising over Cook's and Opunohu Bays, is where I send couples who want scenery over sand. A 4x4 trip up to the Belvedere lookout gives you both bays at once, and it is the kind of view that makes people go quiet. Back aboard, dinner at L'Etoile or the open-air Le Grill as the island slips past is hard to beat. It is close to Tahiti, so it often bookends the cruise.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Paul Gauguin good for honeymoons?

Very much so. The small size, French Polynesia itineraries, and relaxed pace suit couples, and the crew are used to marking honeymoons and anniversaries if you let them know.

Can we arrange a private dinner or special occasion onboard?

Often, yes. Let your travel specialist and the ship know in advance and the crew can usually help with romantic touches; specifics vary, so confirm details when you book.

Which cabin is best for a couple?

It depends on budget. Many couples love a balcony stateroom for private lagoon views, but the ship is small enough that even lower categories give you easy access to the marina and decks.
