Butler Service on the Paul Gauguin: My Honest Take

Home / Articles / Cabins & Deck Plans

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

On my first sailing aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, my suite attendant had worked out by day two that I liked iced tea on the balcony before dinner, and it simply appeared. With only about 330 guests on board, the crew has the room to learn your name and your habits fast. I've sailed bigger ships where that never happens. Here I want to walk you through what the service actually includes, where the suite butlers fit in, and how to ask for things so the attention feels useful rather than fussy.

A small ship is what makes it work

The reason the service feels personal comes down to numbers. With roughly 330 guests and a high crew-to-guest ratio, the staff aren't stretched across thousands of people. By the second day they tend to know how you take your coffee and which lounger you favour. On a larger ship that kind of recognition is rare; here it's the norm, and it shapes the whole week.

What the suite butlers actually handle

Butler service comes with the top suite categories rather than every cabin. In practice the butler unpacks and packs if you want, arranges dinner reservations at L'Etoile or La Veranda, sorts canapes before an evening out, and helps line up your shore plans so you aren't juggling logistics. I tell clients to think of them less as a flourish and more as someone who quietly removes the small friction from each day.

How to get your money's worth from it

The guests who enjoy the service most are the ones who speak up. Tell your attendant on day one about allergies, the wine you like, whether you're an early riser. Ask them to hold a quiet table or set up a celebration. The crew genuinely want the details, and the more you share, the better the week runs. Hanging back politely tends to leave the best touches unused.

Frequently asked questions

Does every cabin come with a butler?

No. Dedicated butler service is tied to the higher suite categories, while every guest still gets attentive stateroom attendants. If butler service matters to you, check which suite grades include it when you book, as the categories can change.

Is the attention intrusive?

I haven't found it so. The crew are trained to read the room, present when you want something and out of the way when you don't. If you prefer more space, just say so early and they'll adjust.

Are gratuities included?

Paul Gauguin fares generally include gratuities, so there's no nightly tipping math to worry about. That said, inclusions can change, so confirm what's covered when you book.
