Motu Mahana: A Day on Paul Gauguin's Private Island

2 min read

Of all the days on a Paul Gauguin sailing, the one on Motu Mahana is the day clients email me about afterwards. It is the line's private islet off Taha'a, and it is the rare "private island" stop that lives up to the phrase rather than padding the brochure.

What the day is actually like

The ship anchors off Taha'a and tenders you to the motu for the day. There is a floating bar in the lagoon, a Polynesian barbecue on the sand, kayaks and paddleboards, and warm, flat water you can stand in for an hour. It is unstructured on purpose — you swim, eat, and do very little, which is the point.

Why it works better than a crowded shore day

Because the Paul Gauguin is a smaller ship, the motu never feels packed. You are sharing a private island with a few hundred guests, not a few thousand, so a lounger and a patch of shade are never a competition. Les Gauguines bring music and dancing in the afternoon, and it stays relaxed rather than staged.

How to make the most of it

Go ashore early for the quiet water, take a break back aboard at midday if the sun is strong, and return for the afternoon music. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water shoes are the only things people wish they'd brought.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Motu Mahana?

It's a private islet off Taha'a in the Society Islands, used exclusively by Paul Gauguin Cruises for a full beach day during most Society Islands sailings.

Is there an extra charge for the Motu Mahana day?

The beach day itself — tendering ashore, the barbecue lunch and the floating bar — is part of the sailing. Confirm specifics for your departure when you book, as inclusions can vary.

Is it good for non-swimmers?

Yes. The lagoon is shallow and calm close to shore, so you can wade and relax without swimming out. Water shoes help on the sand and reef edges.
