Paul Gauguin Cruises for Couples & Romance

2 min read

I've sent a lot of couples on the m/s Paul Gauguin, including a few honeymooners, and the feedback rhymes every time: it feels intimate. A ship of about 330 guests doesn't have lines, crowds or a party-deck soundtrack, which is exactly what most couples are after. Dinners run quiet and relaxed, and the islands do the romancing for you. I still remember a sunset off Bora Bora from my own sailing that needed no embellishment. If you want time together rather than a checklist, this ship fits.

Quiet dining for two

Evenings are unhurried. L'Etoile serves French cuisine, La Veranda turns out Polynesian dishes and local fish, and Le Grill is open-air and casual. There's no formal night to dress around, so a couple can have a slow dinner and a drink under the stars without any fuss. Tables for two are easy to arrange.

Beach days and the private island

Motu Mahana, the line's private island off Taha'a, is the romantic centerpiece: a quiet beach, a barbecue and a floating bar in the lagoon. Couples spend the day swimming and doing very little, which is the point. The Tahitian hosts, Les Gauguines, add music and culture that feel genuine rather than performed.

Choosing your timing

French Polynesia sails year-round, drier around May to October and warmer November to April. For a honeymoon I lean toward the drier months for reliable beach days, though shoulder seasons are quieter and often easier to book. Whatever the date, the small-ship feel stays the same, so pick what suits your calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ship good for honeymoons?

Very. The small size, quiet dinners and beach days on Motu Mahana suit couples who want privacy over a big-ship scene. Many of my honeymoon clients rebook for an anniversary.

Will it feel crowded?

Rarely. With around 330 guests there are no real lines, and you can always find a quiet corner of the deck or a table for two at dinner.

When is the most romantic time to sail?

The drier May-to-October months give the most dependable beach weather, while shoulder seasons are quieter. Both work well; confirm exact dates when you book.
