I've packed for the m/s Paul Gauguin myself, and the first thing I tell clients is to leave the tuxedo at home. There is no formal night on this ship, which surprises people coming off the big lines. Days run barefoot-casual around the pool and the marina at the stern, and evenings are what the crew call elegant resort wear. The French Polynesian air is warm and humid, so heavy fabrics are a mistake I made on my first sailing. With only about 330 guests aboard, nobody is dressing to impress a crowd of thousands.
Daytime aboard and ashore
During the day I live in shorts, a light shirt and reef sandals. You step on and off tenders for snorkeling and beach time, so quick-drying clothes and a swimsuit you can throw on under a cover-up save you constantly changing. Bring a rash guard and a hat; the sun off the water is stronger than it feels.
Evenings and dinner
Dinner is relaxed but pulled-together. At L'Etoile, the French restaurant, men wear a collared shirt and slacks and women a sundress or similar, and the same works at La Veranda and the casual Le Grill. I pack one slightly nicer outfit for the captain's welcome, but jackets and ties are genuinely optional and most nights I skip them.What I actually pack
My short list: two swimsuits, three light tops, one pair of long trousers, a collared shirt or two, sandals, water shoes for rocky entries, and a light rain layer for a passing shower. Laundry service is available if you run short, so resist overpacking. Leave room for a pareo you'll buy at Motu Mahana, the line's private island off Taha'a.
