Shore Excursions Worth Booking in Polynesia

Home / Articles / Cruise Planning

2 min read

After enough sailings through French Polynesia, you stop booking shore excursions by the brochure photo and start booking by what actually holds up. Some are worth every franc; a few you can happily skip and just enjoy the lagoon off the marina instead. Prices and exact offerings vary by season and island, so treat what follows as how I'd choose rather than a fixed menu, and confirm details when you book. Here's where I'd spend the day.

Get in the water first

In the Tuamotus, a guided snorkel or dive is the excursion I'd never miss; Rangiroa and Fakarava are the standouts for marine life. In the Society Islands the lagoon tours with a motu picnic are the easy win, gentle enough for anyone and beautiful from the boat. If you only book one type of outing, make it a water day.

Spend time with the culture

The cultural excursions surprise people. A 4WD trip into Moorea's interior or a visit to a village and marae tells you why these islands feel different from one another. Pair that with the music and dance the Gauguines bring aboard and you leave understanding the place, not just photographing it.

Don't over-book the day

The mistake I see most is stacking two excursions into one port. You end up rushed and you miss the ship's own marina, which is free, easy and often the best swim of the day. I'd book one solid outing per stop, confirm the price and timing in advance, and leave room to do nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Which excursions are most worth it?

Water-based ones: guided snorkelling or diving in the Tuamotus, and lagoon tours with a motu picnic in the Society Islands. They're the experiences guests remember.

How much do shore excursions cost?

Prices vary by island, operator and season, so confirm the current cost and what's included when you book rather than relying on older figures.

Should I book excursions in advance?

Popular dives and small-group tours fill up, so I'd reserve those early and confirm timings, while leaving some ports open to enjoy the ship's marina.
