Paul Gauguin Cruises With Kids: What Works

Home / Articles / Cruise Planning

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

Families ask me whether a 330-guest ship in French Polynesia is too grown-up for kids, and my answer is usually the opposite of what they expect. The Paul Gauguin works for families precisely because it's small and unfussy, no queues, no megaship chaos, just easy access to the water. I've watched teenagers who arrived glued to their phones spend a whole afternoon jumping off the marina. There are a few things worth knowing before you book, though, because it isn't a waterslide-and-arcade kind of ship. Here's what I tell parents.

Cabins that fit a family

The staterooms are roomier than the cruise average, and several categories connect, which is what you want when you'd like the kids near but not on top of you. For multi-generational trips I'll often pair connecting cabins so grandparents are a door away. Book these early; there are only so many connecting pairs on a ship this size.

Dining that won't fight you

There are three restaurants: L'Etoile for French, La Veranda leaning Polynesian with local fish, and the relaxed Le Grill. Le Grill is where families gravitate, casual, outdoors, and easy with picky eaters, while the kitchen is happy to keep things simple for younger ones. Quieter, more formal dinners are there too on the nights the adults want them.

The marina is the secret weapon

The platform that folds down off the stern, the marina, turns the ship into a launch pad for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding straight off the back. This is what hooks active kids and teens. Pair it with snorkelling-focused shore stops and a day on Motu Mahana, the line's private island off Taha'a, and the days fill themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dedicated kids' program?

Family sailings typically run a children's program, but offerings vary by departure and season. I check the specific cruise date for you, since it isn't on every sailing.

Will fussy eaters be okay?

Yes. Le Grill's casual menu suits most kids, and the galley will happily prepare simpler plates on request across the three restaurants.

What's the best age to bring children?

Kids comfortable in the water get the most from it, since the marina and snorkelling are the highlights. Confident swimmers from roughly school age up tend to love it most.
