Is the Paul Gauguin Right for Adventure Travellers?

People often ask me whether a luxury ship can really suit someone who travels to be active, and I understand the doubt. I came to the Paul Gauguin expecting a floating resort and found something closer to a well-run expedition base with good food. At about 330 guests it is small enough to anchor where larger ships cannot, which is the whole point for an active traveller. I have watched guests spend the morning diving and the evening at a quiet dinner without feeling they compromised on either. Here is how I frame the fit for clients who care more about doing than lounging.

A Small Ship Reaches Places Big Ones Can't

Size is the deciding factor for me. The Paul Gauguin can slip into the smaller lagoons and anchorages of the Tuamotus and Marquesas that a 3,000-passenger ship simply cannot approach. That means more time in the water and less time ferrying crowds ashore. For an adventure traveller, proximity to the reef and the trailhead matters more than any onboard feature.

Active Days, Then a Proper Dinner

The rhythm here is what wins people over. You can dive or hike hard, rinse off at the marina, and then sit down to a real meal rather than a cafeteria line. Les Gauguines, the Tahitian hosts aboard, keep the culture front and centre with music and storytelling, so the evenings still feel rooted in the place. It is active travel without the rough edges that wear you down over two weeks.

Where the Itineraries Actually Go

The core sailings cover Tahiti and the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, and the Marquesas, with Cook Islands routings in the mix and Fiji and Tonga voyages running roughly every other year. I tell adventure-minded clients to look hard at the Marquesas and the Fiji/Tonga seasons, since those carry the most remote terrain and the best diving. Dates and schedules shift, so confirm the specific season when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Paul Gauguin too sedate for an active traveller?

I would not call it sedate. The watersports marina, the diving program, and the remote anchorages give active travellers plenty to do; the difference is that you also get comfort and good food when you are done.

How many guests are aboard?

About 330, which is small for an ocean ship. That scale is what lets it reach lagoons and islands the large lines skip.

Can adventure and relaxation mix on one sailing?

Yes, and that balance is the ship's strength. Many of my clients pair demanding days ashore with slow days at Motu Mahana or onboard.
