The day everyone remembers from a Paul Gauguin sailing is the one on Motu Mahana, the line's own small islet off Taha'a. I've spent that day myself, and the appeal is simple: the whole ship decants onto one quiet beach for swimming, a barbecue and a floating bar in the shallows. With only around 330 guests, it never feels packed, you can always find your own patch of sand. The Gauguines, the ship's Tahitian hosts, set the tone with music and a relaxed welcome. Here's how I'd spend it.
What the day looks like
You tender across from the ship to a sheltered beach on the motu, and the crew sets up a barbecue lunch, loungers and a bar you can wade out to. The water is calm and shallow a long way out, which makes it easy for swimmers of any confidence. I like to alternate between the water and the shade, with no schedule to keep, that's the whole point. It runs as a single unhurried day rather than a packed itinerary.

Make the most of it
My advice is to go ashore early, claim a shady spot, and settle in rather than rushing back and forth. Snorkelling gear is worth bringing, the reef edges hold plenty of fish, and the floating bar is more fun than it has any right to be. Watch the sun, the shade can be limited and the day is long, so reapply and take a hat. Beyond that, I genuinely do as little as possible, and I tell clients to do the same.
Why it stands out
Plenty of cruise lines claim a private island, but few are this small or this woven into the local setting off Taha'a. Because it's tied to a 330-guest ship, the beach feels like a gathering rather than a resort overrun. The Tahitian hosts make it feel rooted in place instead of generic. For most of my clients it ends up being the favourite day of the whole trip.
