What I steer Gauguin guests toward on Raiatea

Raiatea is the island I get the fewest questions about and wish I got more. Most people booking the Paul Gauguin are dreaming about Bora Bora, and I get it. But Raiatea is where I tell guests the real history of these islands lives. I have stood at the Taputapuatea marae early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive, and it changed how I saw the whole region. If you give it a proper half-day, it rewards you.

The marae most cruisers walk right past

Taputapuatea is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, for much of Polynesia, the spiritual centre from which voyagers once set out across the Pacific. It is a complex of open stone platforms, not a building, so it asks a little imagination from you. I always suggest going with a guide who can explain what each section meant, because the stones do not speak for themselves. Ten minutes of context turns a field of rock into one of the more moving stops on the whole itinerary.

Up the Faaroa River, the one you can actually navigate

Raiatea has the only navigable river in French Polynesia, the Faaroa, and going up it by kayak or small boat is my favourite way to spend a morning here. The banks close in with hibiscus and wild ginger, and it feels nothing like the open lagoon. It is calm, shaded, and a good antidote if you have had a few sunny beach days in a row. Shore excursions for this fill up, so I tell guests to book it early rather than wait until they are aboard.

Why Raiatea, and not just a tender stop

Raiatea is the sailing capital of these islands, and it sits right beside Taha'a, where the Gauguin's private islet, Motu Mahana, lies just off the coast. That pairing is part of what makes this stretch of the cruise feel relaxed: a morning of history or river paddling, then an afternoon with your feet in the lagoon. Itineraries shift, so confirm with your booking whether your sailing includes the Motu Mahana day near here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Raiatea worth booking a shore excursion?

Yes, in my view. The Taputapuatea marae and the Faaroa River are both things you cannot really experience from the ship, and they are what set Raiatea apart from a straightforward beach day.

How do I get to the Taputapuatea marae?

It is a short drive from where the ship tenders in, and most guests reach it on an organised shore excursion with a local guide. Going independently is possible but you lose the historical commentary, which is the best part.

Does the Paul Gauguin overnight near Raiatea?

Some itineraries pair Raiatea with a day at Motu Mahana off neighbouring Taha'a, and a few include an overnight in the area. Schedules change, so check your specific sailing when you book.
