Private Island Stops on a South Pacific Cruise

2 min read

When people picture a South Pacific cruise, they often picture a private island stop, and on the Paul Gauguin that picture is largely accurate. I've sailed these waters enough to know the difference between a marketing beach and a genuinely good one, and the line's own motu off Taha'a falls firmly in the second camp. But there's more to a private island day than the photos suggest, and a little planning makes it far better. The appeal comes down to a small ship reaching places the big ones can't anchor near. Below is what I tell clients before they go.

What 'private' actually means here

On the Paul Gauguin, the private stop is Motu Mahana, an islet reserved for the ship's guests on sailings that call at Taha'a. Because the ship carries only about 330 people, the beach never feels busy even when everyone's ashore. That exclusivity is the real draw, not anything elaborate built on the sand. You get a barbecue, a floating bar in the lagoon, and Tahitian hosts, and otherwise the island does the work.

How it compares to other shore days

Regular ports give you villages, markets and 4WD tours, which I love for a change of pace, but the private motu is purely about the water and the beach. I tell people to treat it as the day to slow right down rather than chase activities. The snorkelling straight off the shore is easy and rewarding, and the lagoon stays calm and shallow. If you book one day to simply do nothing, make it this one.

Planning around the weather

French Polynesia is a year-round destination, with the drier months running roughly May to October and the warmer, wetter stretch around November to April. A private island day is best on a settled morning, so I keep flexible expectations since tender access depends on conditions. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a hat, because shade is limited once you leave the palms. Plan loosely and the day tends to take care of itself.

Frequently asked questions

Which South Pacific cruise has a private island stop?

Paul Gauguin sailings that call at Taha'a in French Polynesia include the private motu day at Motu Mahana. Itineraries vary, so check that your chosen cruise includes Taha'a.

Is snorkelling good at the private island?

Yes. The lagoon off Motu Mahana is shallow, calm and clear, which makes for easy snorkelling right from the beach, suitable even for beginners.

What should I bring ashore?

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water shoes and a towel from the ship. Shade is limited away from the palms, so sun protection matters most.
