Pre-Cruise Days Before the Paul Gauguin

By Kirsten — Far & Away Adventures, Paul Gauguin Cruises specialists

The single best thing you can do for a Paul Gauguin trip is arrive before sailing day, not on it. Flights to Tahiti are long and they get delayed, and I've seen the panic when someone's connection slips and the ship is leaving Papeete that afternoon. Building in a pre-cruise night or two removes that risk entirely and starts your holiday on the right foot. I've stayed near Papeete before sailings myself, and that first slow day, adjusting to island time before you even board, is worth far more than the cost of the room.

Why the pre-cruise night isn't optional in my book

Embarkation is fixed, your flight isn't. Arriving a day early means a delayed or cancelled connection is an inconvenience instead of a missed cruise. It also lets you shake off the journey, the time difference from North America is real, so you board rested rather than wrecked. I treat the pre-cruise night as part of the cruise, not an add-on.

Where I put guests before sailing

Most people stay near Papeete or out by the Tahiti coast for the first night, close enough to make embarkation easy. If you've got two nights, a quick trip over to Moorea before the cruise is a lovely warm-up, though I keep that flexible so you're back in plenty of time. The point is proximity and a soft landing, not cramming in sightseeing before you've even started.

What I arrange and what to confirm

I book the pre-cruise hotel, the airport transfer, and the timing against your inbound flight so the pieces line up. Package contents, room types, and rates change by season and availability, and flight schedules shift, so I confirm the current details for your dates and flag anything that's subject to change before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to arrive before embarkation day?

I strongly recommend it. A pre-cruise night protects you against flight delays and lets you board rested. It's the cheapest insurance on the whole trip.

Where should I stay the night before?

Near Papeete or along the Tahiti coast, close to the port. I pick the spot based on your arrival time and budget and arrange the transfer to the ship.

Can I visit another island before the cruise?

Yes, with two nights a short Moorea stay works well. I keep the timing conservative so you're back for embarkation with room to spare. Schedules can change, so I confirm everything close to departure.
