Cultural Shore Days on the Paul Gauguin

3 min read

The first time I sailed the m/s Paul Gauguin, the shore day I remember best wasn't a beach at all. It was an afternoon on Huahine standing in front of a stone marae while a local guide explained what the platform was for, long before any cruise ship existed. With only about 330 guests aboard, the cultural excursions never felt like a crowd being herded. I had time to ask questions and actually hear the answers. That is the part of French Polynesia I push people toward when they call me. The dancing and the drumming are wonderful, but the quiet history is what stays with you.

What the onboard cultural program is really like

Les Gauguines, the Tahitian hosts who travel with the ship, run craft sessions, language bits, and music through the week, so the culture isn't bolted on at the ports, it's aboard with you. I have sat through a pareo-tying demo that turned into half the lounge laughing at their own knots. None of it is mandatory, which I like. You can dip in for twenty minutes or spend the afternoon, and either way you pick up more about daily Polynesian life than any guidebook gives you.

Motu Mahana and the island-side experiences

The private motu off Taha'a is the cultural day people talk about afterward. There's a barbecue, a floating bar, and the crew sets up music and dance on the sand, but what makes it work is that it's genuinely theirs, not a staged set. On the bigger islands I steer guests toward the smaller-group cultural excursions, a marae walk on Raiatea, a vanilla farm on Taha'a, rather than the big bus tours. You see more and you talk to people.

How I help guests choose shore days

When I plan a sailing for someone, I match the cultural excursions to what they actually care about. History buffs get the archaeological sites, families get the lagoon and craft days, food people get the market and tasting stops. I have done most of these myself, so I can tell you which ones are worth the early start and which you can skip to nap on the marina deck. Prices and exact offerings shift season to season, so I confirm the current line-up when we book.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to book cultural excursions in advance?

Some of the small-group ones fill up because the ship is small, so I usually reserve the popular cultural days for my guests before sailing rather than waiting until aboard.

Is Motu Mahana included?

The private island day is part of the itineraries that call near Taha'a. There's no extra charge to be on the motu itself, though a few add-on activities there may cost more.

Are the cultural activities suitable for kids?

Yes. The craft sessions and the motu day work well for families, and Les Gauguines are good with children. I match the shore choices to the ages in your group.
