Choosing the Right Paul Gauguin Tahiti Itinerary

2 min read

People often ask me which Tahiti itinerary on the Paul Gauguin is the best one, and my answer is always the same: it depends on what you came for. I've sailed these waters on the ship myself, and the routes really do feel different from one another. The classic Society Islands loop is the heart of the program, but it's not the only way to go. Let me lay out how I think through the choice with travellers.

The classic Society Islands loop

The signature sailing rounds Tahiti and the Society Islands, usually taking in Bora Bora, Taha'a, Moorea and Raiatea over a week or so. This is where you get the famous lagoons, the beach day at the private island of Motu Mahana off Taha'a, and easy days in and out of the water from the marina off the stern. If it's your first time in French Polynesia, I almost always start here. It captures the postcard the region is known for without rushing you.

Going farther: Tuamotus and Marquesas

When travellers have sailed the Societies before or want something less familiar, I point them toward the longer routes that reach the Tuamotu atolls or the dramatic, high islands of the Marquesas. These itineraries trade a little of the soft-lagoon ease for remoteness and scenery you can't reach easily any other way. They run less frequently and the days at sea are longer, so they suit travellers who like the rhythm of a real voyage. I think of them as the second trip, once the islands have their hooks in you.

Matching the route to your time and season

Beyond geography, I look at length and timing. A seven-night sailing fits most people's vacation; the longer voyages ask for more days and a bit more flexibility. The drier stretch runs roughly May through October and the warmer, wetter months roughly November through April, though conditions vary year to year. Sailing dates and routes shift between seasons, so I always confirm the current schedule before building a trip around a particular itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Which Tahiti itinerary is best for first-timers?

The classic Society Islands sailing. It covers Bora Bora, Taha'a, Moorea and Raiatea plus the Motu Mahana beach day, giving you the region's signature lagoons in about a week without a punishing pace.

How are the Tuamotus and Marquesas trips different?

They reach more remote atolls and high islands, with longer sea days and less frequent departures. I suggest them for repeat visitors who want scenery and isolation beyond the main Society Islands loop.

Does the time of year change the itinerary?

Routes and dates vary by season, and the drier months run roughly May through October. Conditions shift year to year, so confirm the current schedule before committing to a specific sailing.
