What Butler Service Includes on the Paul Gauguin

I had a guest once tell me she wasn't sure what a butler was even for on a ship this size. By the end of her sailing she was emailing me a list of things she didn't want to give up. Butler service on the Paul Gauguin isn't about formality, it's about removing the small frictions that eat into a vacation. Because the ship carries only about 330 guests, the butler has the bandwidth to actually follow through. Here's what that looks like across a typical sailing.

Help that starts before you board

The useful part of butler service begins before embarkation day. Your butler can note dietary needs, stock the suite with the drinks you actually like, and sort out small celebration touches for an anniversary or birthday. They'll also smooth the boarding itself, meeting you and walking you to the suite rather than leaving you to find your way. I tell clients to send their preferences through me a couple of weeks out so the suite is set up the way they want from the first afternoon.

The in-suite touches that add up

Day to day, the butler keeps your suite running quietly in the background. That means pressing and unpacking, refreshing the bar and ice, arranging canapes before dinner, and bringing full courses from the restaurants to your veranda when you'd rather not move. None of these are dramatic on their own, but on a relaxed French Polynesia sailing they add up to a stay where you're rarely thinking about logistics.

Reservations and shore-day logistics

The butler is also your fixer for the parts of the trip that happen off the suite. They'll book your table at L'Etoile, help line up excursions in Bora Bora or Moorea, and keep your shore days from colliding with a dinner you wanted. If plans change, and in the islands they sometimes do, you have one person to call rather than three desks to chase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a butler and a stateroom steward

Every cabin has a steward who keeps the room tidy. A butler, included with the top suites, takes on planning, reservations, in-suite dining and personal requests on top of housekeeping.

Can the butler arrange dining in my suite from any restaurant

In-suite dining from the ship's restaurants is one of the most-used butler perks. Timing and full menu availability can vary by night, so it's worth asking your butler early in the day.

Do I need to tip the butler separately

Tipping practices vary and the line's gratuity policy can change, so confirm the current approach when you book rather than assuming. Many guests recognize exceptional service personally at the end of the sailing.
