Bora Bora by Cruise: What the Day Is Really Like

2 min read

Bora Bora is the photo everyone has in their head before they call me. The good news is it lives up to it; the useful news is that knowing how the cruise day works helps you decide whether one day is enough or whether you want to add nights ashore.

The lagoon is the point

From the ship you're right on one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. The day is built around the water — lagoon tours, snorkelling with rays and reef fish, and that unmistakable view of Mount Otemanu. On a smaller ship you tender in quickly and spend the time in the lagoon rather than waiting to get to it.

One day, or add resort nights?

For many travellers, a full Bora Bora day on the cruise is plenty alongside Moorea, Taha'a and a motu day. But if an overwater bungalow is on your list — a honeymoon, a big anniversary — I'd add two or three nights ashore before or after the sailing. You get both the variety of the cruise and the bucket-list stay.

Make the day count

Book a lagoon excursion rather than staying near the tender dock; the far side of the lagoon is where the water and the views open up. Reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone case are the two things I'd never skip.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day in Bora Bora enough on a cruise?

For many travellers, yes — paired with Moorea, Taha'a and a motu day it's a strong taste of Bora Bora. If an overwater bungalow stay matters to you, add a couple of resort nights before or after the cruise.

Should I add an overwater bungalow stay?

If it's a honeymoon or milestone trip and the bungalow is a priority, a short pre- or post-cruise stay in Bora Bora is worth it. Otherwise the cruise day captures the lagoon beautifully.

Does every Paul Gauguin itinerary include Bora Bora?

Many Society Islands sailings include Bora Bora, but exact stops vary by itinerary. Confirm the day-by-day before booking.
