Why I Recommend the Paul Gauguin for the South Pacific

2 min read

I have sent a lot of travelers to the South Pacific over the years, and when the brief is French Polynesia by sea, the m/s Paul Gauguin is usually the first ship I name. Part of it is scale. At roughly 330 guests, it slips into small lagoons that larger ships cannot reach, and it was built specifically for these waters. The rest is the way the experience is put together, from the Tahitian hosts to the marina off the stern. Here is how I explain the fit to clients.

Why a small ship suits these islands

French Polynesia is a place of narrow passes and shallow lagoons, and a smaller ship simply has more room to maneuver there. The Paul Gauguin anchors close to islands like Taha'a and tenders guests to Motu Mahana, its private island, for a beach day with watersports straight off the sand. You spend less time looking at a port from a distance and more time actually in the water.

The onboard experience

For its size, the ship punches above its weight on dining and atmosphere. There are three restaurants: L'Etoile for French fine dining, La Veranda for Polynesian dishes and local fish, and Le Grill for a relaxed open-air meal. Les Gauguines, the Tahitian hosts, bring music, dance, and language to the days at sea, which gives the voyage a sense of place you do not get from a generic cruise. The marina off the stern means kayaks and paddleboards are a few steps away when conditions allow.

Itineraries and when to go

Most sailings center on the Society Islands and the Tuamotus, with longer voyages reaching the Marquesas. Fiji and Tonga itineraries come around roughly every other year, so if those are on your list, plan ahead. French Polynesia is a year-round destination; the months from about May to October tend to be drier, while November to April is warmer with brief showers. I avoid promising specific dates or prices because they move, but I am happy to check current schedules for your window.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Paul Gauguin?

It carries about 330 guests, which is small by cruise standards. That size is exactly what lets it reach the smaller lagoons and islands of French Polynesia.

When is the best time to sail the South Pacific?

French Polynesia works year-round. Roughly May through October is the drier stretch, while November through April is warmer with short showers. Both have good sailing.

Can I sail to Fiji or Tonga on the Paul Gauguin?

Those itineraries run approximately every other year rather than every season. If you want one, it is worth planning early and confirming the current schedule.
